Bonus Song for Saturday...for Ritchie

The first time I heard Ritchie Havens voice I was at a party and I had
to follow the music to the sound system to see who it was on the turn table.
His voice struck such a chord in me, deep, rich and full of soul
that I knew his music would be some of my favorite to listen to in years to come.
His iconic set at Woodstock blew everyone away with his
energy and bizarre way of using his giant thumb as a capo
on the neck of his guitar.
Years later Tom and I had the great pleasure of seeing him twice.
The first was in a club which was okay but the second
time was at a small festival here in our tiny town.
It was summer, it was intimate and after the show we went to introduce
ourselves to him. He was so gracious to every person who wanted
to say hello. He looked at  each of us right in the eye and smiled
that big beautiful smile of his and then took my hand
in both of his great big hands to thank us for coming.
He was truly a genuinely beautiful person.
This song has always been my favorites.
It reminds me of the love and light that he was able to
put forth in his music.
Ritchie Havens died last week and will be missed
but his musical legacy will carry on.

Song for Friday...summery feelings

The other night I watched the movie "Duets".
It's sort of like male Thelma and Louise meets Karaoke night.
It was quite dark actually and I was a bit taken aback.
But there were some funny bits and some good singing in it.
One of the storylines is that of Gwenyth Paltrow
and Huey Lewis as estranged father and daughter.
They end up singing this song but I must say I prefer the original
by Smokie Robinson, although they did a good job too.
It gives me that A M radio summer feeling...transister radios by the water,
no cares in the world except how much more of a tan you'll get that day.
So here's to summer dreams...
Have a great weekend all!

What's the problem?

The other day I witnessed this little kerfuffle across the road.
So there he was just minding his own business...
When all of a sudden this other guy shows up...
Then the raven starts giving the eagle the gears...
The young eagle starts defending HIS side of the story...
I think the young eagle has had about enough and decides he's out of there...
Just another day in the forest.

From the ground up...

Since people are celebrating Earth Day around the world, I thought I would
pay homage to...well...the Earth of course!
But first I must express my opinion that I believe that
every day should be Earth Day.
It is for me anyway.
I just read something that really resonated with me the other day.
The article was talking about recycling, using your own bags at the store,
reusing, lessening power usage, etc...
The writer said that it didn't matter much if you were at 1% or 100%
as long as you were on that path to get there.
I can't agree more and that's what I try to do everyday.
A little here, a lot there, a bit more somewhere else but
always keeping in mind that I, little old me, CAN make a difference.
When you add it all up it can be quite a bit.
I took a walk at the lake yesterday and it was one of those
crazy spring days...cloud, sun, rain, wind, sun, rain, cloud, sun but
none the less beautiful with all the trees sprouting and the birds singing
their little hearts out.
And so, a meditation at the lake...in the midst of all the tragic things,
here it was just me and Griff and our
wonderful world...
