Of old haunts and habits...

I guess there's a reason for the term 'old haunt'.
A place often visited in the past.
A place where memories were made...
It doesn't seem to imply a frightening place...just a place of ghosts...good ghosts...
...echoes of laughter, footsteps, faint dog barks. The shaking off of water and a jingling collar...
And so it is with me these days that in my passage to get through grief,
I have been walking these same footsteps that I used to with Griffin.
The clock inside me knows around what time it was to 'go out'.
I find myself stopping projects instinctively around 2 in the afternoon...
It's a bit of therapy just to try and get out and walk and talk and remember.
This morning trusting sidekick Rosie and her lady Regina and I
went out to the lighthouse in Shirley...
We four spent many a beautiful morning wandering these fields and grounds.
It's an empty feeling getting in the van for an adventure without
my main ingredient, Griffin.
A friend said the other night when I mentioned that emptiness,
"yeah, it's not like you had a Chihuahua".
Indeed Griffin was a big boy who took up a lot of real estate,
and not just physically but his character was just as large.
So we made our way down the trail with the spirits of Griff floating alongside.
The spring will come and go again and this rawness will ebb and flow...
At home it's the same.
Big spaces, empty beds.
He was always made comfy with a bed in several places around the place.
I haven't quite come to clearing them all away.
I need to process it and slowly find  the right time to 'put things away'.
It's an awfully long time, 12 years,  to have that big black muzzle hanging about my shoulder,
reminding me of 5 o'clock suppers, coming home to the muffled "woof" from inside
the house if I had been somewhere sans dog.
Or if he was outside he would come bounding down to greet me.
So I will not 'get over it' but instead 'go through it'
I'll come out on the other side having known the truth of love and companionship.

(thanks for another session Rosie and Regina)

It Shirley is!!

If you take the road West past Sooke you will pass places like
Gordons Beach, Muir Creek and French Beach.
But wait...just before French Beach you'll pass through the
dot on your map known as Shirley.
Sure, you might think its famous for the Sherringham Point Lighthouse
which I've written about  here ..
...or maybe it's the quaint little community hall that flashes by
as you drive through...
...But let me fill you in on a locals secret.
Next time you're heading out, or back from points west like China Beach, Sombrio or Port Renfrew,
take a break at this little gem of a cafe...
As soon as you walk up through the sweet gardens and through that inviting red door...
...you get that warm, welcoming feeling..and it's not just the choice of paint colour...
...or the little rainbows from the crystals in the window...
Of course it helps, but how about those super friendly faces!!
 But wait!
That's not all!
The sights and smells will 'Shirley' make you swoon...
...and it's all made from scratch, right here...scrumptious muffins...
...melt in your mouth savoury scones...
 YUM!!
 Most excellent coffee too!
Today I was here for the muffins and coffee but the menu has so
many other DELICIOUS options.
( I can attest to this since I've been here several times for lunch!)
Soups from scratch, massive paninis, sandwiches to die for!
Come the warmer weather the patio awaits...
...bright coloured chairs ready for the lounging...
So next time you head West...slow down at this jewel of a spot, come on in
and say hi to Phil and Sheena and the rest of the awesome staff...
 You'll SHIRLEY not regret it!!

Fields of gold...

I've taken you here before...
...just past this tree, down a little trail...
I come here mostly in the summer on bright, warm mornings but today
it's the spring weather that beckons my pal Regina and I with the dogs
down to the Sherringham Point lighthouse...the other post is here
...the only lighthouse actually ON Vancouver Island.
All others are on rocky islets off of the main island.
This morning we are blessed to have spotted a few fields of gold in the distance...
Long ago I imagine the Lighthouse Keepers wife planting these around her house...
...to brighten up her world after a winter of fierce wind and rain
crashing up on these rocky shores...
Sadly the original house is gone now and the dreaded Scotch broom is threatening
to take over the fields.
Years ago Tom and I picnicked in the open here with views of the Juan de Fuca straights
but since a road was put here, the broom has taken hold.
Last year marked the 100th anniversary of this historic place and I only
hope that we can do some broom bashing and try to bring the meadows back
so next spring the daffodils will have room to spread.

Catch up!

Man, Rosie...sometimes those humans are SO slow!!
Come on you guys!!!
I know Griff!...we've already been to the gate and back...whats taking you?!
Hurry! You have to see this...
Hey, Rosie,  I've been here before!
It's the Sherringham Point lighthouse!
I love it here!
And such a glorious morning too!
So, whats this building for Griff?
Well, Rosie, on foggy days and nights, it blows a big horn so the ships
can make their way safely past the rocky shore.

Let's get a closer look...
It's REALLY big hey?
Hey Griff, I know another great place really close by...we can run from here...
WHAT?! I don't think I want to go there!!!
No, No! It's o.k Griff...it's called that because it's a really tiny beach!
Hey, is that a stick that Regina has?
Look there's even a rope swing too!!
Kerry loves a good rope swing!
Hey Rosie, look at all of these mussel shells.
Do you think it's a compulsive / obsessive otter?
Yeah, maybe Griff. Or maybe just a really organized raccoon!
Looks like Kerry and Regina are headed for that bench for a rest.
Yeah, Rosie....I'm a little tired and ready for breakfast myself.
See you next walk!
