Observations from a Sunday morning....

It's a beautiful autumn morning here on the Island.
The sun has been a friend to us for yet a few more days, her
strength for warmth fading but all the same, keeping us warm in spirit.
Tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving so I'm off to visit
my family for turkey and pumpkin cheesecake squares with whipping cream...
but before I do I thought I'd share some of my morning walk photos.
Today it's all about the mushrooms...
the deadly but beautiful aminita...
...the tasty little puffball
(had some of these sauteed with garlic and kale the other night...dee-lish!)
I know for sure about 6 edible mushrooms and unless I'm 100 percent
positive, nothing goes on my plate.
A lot of these will just have to be looked at today...
There were mushrooms EVERYWHERE I looked today and poor Griffin
had to patiently wait while I bent down on hands and knees to take in their fleeting appearance...
The common name of some mushrooms conjure up images of fairey folk, woodland shadows,
deep, dark mysterious tales of yore...
elfin saddle
witches butter
goats foot
destroying angel
death cap
tree ears
Satans bolete
swollen stalked cat
green pinafore
octopus stinkhorn...
the list goes on.
And it's also the time of delicate, dripping morning spider webs...
Queen Anne's lace....closed for the season...
bed time for ladybugs...
The cool nights have given leaves their brightest dress...
Some of the beauty outside my door which I am forever Thank-full for.
Happy Thanksgiving fellow Canucks!

Song for Friday...odd fellows...

I was a big fan of Edie Brickell when she first came out but she
kind of fell off the radar for a while.
She has been known also as Mrs Paul Simon and had
a brief appearance in "Born on the 4th of July"
as a folk singer in a coffee house.
Steve Martin on the other hand has been in the limelight
for quite some time...
but who knew that these two
would become a duet and put out an album together?!
So here's a wee taste of this odd couple but a great one...
enjoy...have a great weekend all!

The size of it all....

It's a known fact that if you've ever driven through Ontario, be prepared...
It's a big wide province which takes at least 3 days to get out of.
Funny thing is that you can pretty much drive through the next 2 provinces
in the  same amount of time or less.
Our trip through the great land of The Canadian Shield was full
of lots of rocks and trees and trees and rocks and many warning signs like this...
Giant albino moose at night?
Nothing says Canada like a big ass flag on a rock!
The Mighty Lake Superior that seems like an ocean at times..."The big lake they call Gitchagoomay" as Gordon Lightfoot sang in his homage to one of the giant freighters which went down, killing
all the men on board. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Not quite sure about this warning...no open cans of beans? soup? dog food?
And LOTS of water and trees...
Did I mention the rock?
Anyway, somewhere up around Thunder Bay we found a place that one
of the ladies at a visitor centre said was a must see.
"It's Canada's Grand Canyon you know" she said.
She gave us some vague directions and so after being a little lost, we finally
found the road up to Ouimet Canyon.
And we were the only ones there...
First the short hike in...
 Starting to feel like fall...
 Lovely birch trees everywhere...
...and there it was...
...shear red rock walls 300 feet high...
...looking the other way at the Indian Head pinnacle...

A little portrait for a souvenier!...
Think of the eons of time, rock and water to have carved this canyon...

Like I said, we had the place to ourselves except for the resident creatures who came to visit...
So the geography of rocks and trees presented to us in the most dramatic of forms.
Ouimet Canyon.
One of Ontario's silent beauties.
