Song for Friday...for the sun seekers!

(Mexico 2012)

Seems like everywhere I go people are flying off to hot and sunny places.
My daughter and son in law are in Panama...
the dentist is off to Maui...
her receptionist is off to Costa Rica...
the hygienist is off to Mexico...
a customer in the flower shop is off to The Grand Caymans and Cuba...
a friend from yoga is off to Joshua Tree...
Me? I'm here sitting in the sun but its bitter cold outside.
No plans for us to go anywhere right now but I'm fine by the fire.
So here's one for all you sun seekers...
Have a great trip!
Have a great weekend all!

Around the house...

Sitting here at the table and I'm intoxicated by the fragrance of these...
I bought them last week and within a few days of  being inside
with the warmth of the wood stove and some sunshine...
...they are all three stems, heavily laden with spring perfume...
...filling the house with promise and the optimism of warmer days to come...
My little oxalis which I received last St Patricks Day has laid dormant
for most of the winter. But in the past few weeks she has been
sprouting new leaves almost daily...
...as if she's just bursting with spring joy!
I received something most interesting in the mail for my birthday a few weeks back...
My daughter had these shipped from this shop. They hand make these beautiful arrows
with real feathers and poplar wood from sustainable sources...
Sweet little gift tag as well!
They're only for decorative use so don't imagine me out there in
the forest looking for deer...maybe I'll use a few on Valentines Day!
 Do you like marbles?
I inherited a bunch of odds and ends from another crafter who was getting
rid of some felting supplies and these were in amongst them...
We used to have huge marble collections when I was a girl and I remember
in the spring the school yard was full of all types of games to challenge your marble skills.
Many kids carried them around in those purple Crown Royal cloth bags that the
whiskey came in. Of course the big boulder types and the clear crystal ones were the real prize ones...
...I always wondered about the coloured bits in the middle and how it was
that the twisty design was made. I'm sure with technology these days I could
google it and find out but for now I'll just enjoy them as is on my table reflecting the light.

Song for Friday...The stuff of a legend...

The year was 1989, it was summer and I was volunteering at The Vancouver Folk Festival.

For three summers in July I worked in the kitchen that fed all
of the volunteers and all of the performers.
That meant hundreds of chocolate cupcakes, gallons of coffee,
oodles of noodles and bagfuls of salad.
It also meant that I was able to meet all kinds of interesting and
sometimes famous singers.
One morning I had coffee with children's performer Rafi.
One afternoon I served cappuccino to Billy Bragg.
Other greats included Loreena McKennit, The Sun Rhythm Section (Elvis Presley's band),
Spirit of the West, Lillian Allen.
One of the most interesting groups were 3 women from the North.
Inuit Throat singers.
I wont even try to explain how they sing...you'll have to YouTube it to see it.
There was one performer there who really stood out though.
Pete Seeger.

Part of it was growing up in a folk inspired musical environment.
Part of it was knowing how important he was to so many protest movements.
When I was a kid, our church tried to attract a younger crowd, we had a folk
music mass and sang more than a few of Pete's songs.
That year at the festival, it was a bad one as far as weather goes.
It rained A LOT.
Not just a bit, but ALL weekend it poured.
On Sunday afternoon, Pete was doing a workshop on one of the smaller stages
and at the front where the audience was standing there was a pretty big mud puddle.
No one wanted to sit down and Pete said something about everyone being afraid of a little rain
and could the people in front sit down so the people at the back could see.
When no one responded, in true Seeger fashion, he himself sat
right down in a puddle onstage until everyone else sat down.
Always sticking up for the underdogs.
But the highlight of the night was on Sunday night.
The finale of the show was Pete's performance.
There was quite a few volunteers and performers hanging around backstage
and in the wings while he did his set.
We were all honoured to be witnessing this folk legend.
For his last song he invited us all onstage to sing with him.
After all, he was the King of singalongs.
As I eagerly joined the crowd, I felt a hand grab mine.
I looked over and there was Pete Seeger holding my hand!
Grinning his infectious smile and leading us all
in a booming version of This Land is Your Land.
I'll always remember that moment of Pete just wanting everyone to join in
and sing your heart out.
Just as he always did.
No matter what.
In hard times, in good times, in sad times, he just wanted to sing about it.
Thanks for your music Pete.
And for taking my hand on that magical evening.
So sing along and have a great weekend all!
So long Pete!

Patience, my dears...

We've had some gorgeous clear days and even more clear nights.
We had a friend come out from the city to stay a few days and
we stayed up into the wee hours playing cribbage.
A few times during the course of the evening we stepped outside
and Derrek remarked that the sky looked like a planetarium!
The sky so black and the stars like fairy lights strung above us.
In the morning the van windows were painted frosty masterpieces...
I don't know what phenomenon is at work to develop such intricate designs...
...but life's beautiful little  mysteries astound me over and over!
Icy chrysanthemums etched in silvers and greys...
 Whirls of cloud shapes...
...the sun comes out to enhance the hues and add some sparkle...
A little warmth from my mitten and I can create a tiny porthole to the sunrise!
Meanwhile, inside the house I'm enjoying a dreamy summer bouquet...
...perks from working at a flower shop...
 ...leftovers from last week...
...still gorgeous for at least a few more days...
...summer will come before we know it...
 ...keep dreaming...
...in the grand scheme, it really is 'just around the corner'...
